Hobby horses, a plaything popular amongst 19th century aristocrats, were used to prepare children for riding real horses. Miniature theatre, which was complete with scripts, characters, and sets, fostered a creative and imaginative space for children. Toy soldiers, that were often made with inaccurate uniforms, made children feel as if they were partaking in the war. The popularity of educational toys during the 19th century encouraged toy makers to create toys that would help with children’s cognitive development. A toy enthusiast from Portland, Oregon created a toy museum that houses his antique toy collection. Victorian mourning dolls, commonly used by wealthy families, are wax effigies made to resemble a deceased child. Miniature versions of real life objects such as, toy cars and toy trains, allow children to immerse themselves into different adult roles. Based on Puritan beliefs, “Mansion of Happiness” is a board game inspired by Christian virtues and vices. Based on Bruegel’s, “Children’s Games”, playground games encompass the joyful, nostalgic, and often rambunctious parts of childhood play. At the height of the Spiritualist Movement, the Ouija board allowed both skeptics and believers to communicate with the dead. Close Toy Wonder Rather than their use as tools for play and entertainment, “Toy Wonder” focuses on the functional and educational use of toys.
