Asian carp make muddy lakes while we pollute them with plastic bottles. White-tailed deer overpopulate themselves then migrate to new ecosystems for more space, like our spread of suburbs through urban sprawl. Asian longhorned beetles kill trees when they burrow into them for shelter; like how we deforest for lumber to build our homes. European green crabs shred up long sea grass, which is home to young fish and birds. Meanwhile, our cosmetic landscaping makes large natural spaces unsuitable for wildlife anymore. Zebra mussels drain the life out of native mussels, much like our oil rigs drain the life out of our oceans. We brought red foxes to Australia for fox hunting, yet we blame them for overhunting native rodents. Common starlings are annoyingly loud because of their population, but our noise pollution on city streets is much worse. Common rabbits speed up soil erosion when they dig up the ground to eat, just like our industrial agriculture. Gypsy moths and pesticides have spread extensively and destroyed plant life. Cane toads excrete a toxin that kills native animals; compared to our toxic waste disposal practices. Close Invasive Us Invasive Us examines the impact invasive species have had on the environment and compares this to our own actions to show how we’ve villainized and blamed them for the damage we’ve ultimately caused.
