A solitary old man’s Alarming Anosmia leaves him unable to smell, the intense feelings of isolation and paranoia accompanying this affliction prompting him to fill his house full of smoke alarms. Herbie Hancock’s mishearing of the phrase “Don’t play the bottom notes” as “Don’t Play the Butter Notes” acts as the catalyst to his unique, limited, and widely-praised playing style. Likely due to the poor treatment of women in Achham, Nepal, one woman’s mental conflict surrounding pregnancy leads to Phantom Pregnancy, and in turn to ostracism by her community for misperceived infertility. Seen by many as a celebration of Italian-American Heritage, Columbus Day ultimately pays tribute to a man who had little to do with Italy, never set foot in North America, and destroyed the heritage of those with which he made contact.
