Studies on the rising rates of Alzheimer’s in Latin America have indicated that while providing for a family member with this disease can be rewarding, it takes a heavy toll on one’s mental health, as well as the relationship in question. Due to a culture of hyper-masculinity, a stigma against expressing emotions amongst male peers may discourage seeking aid for depression. Based on observations made in recent LGTBQA university programming, findings suggest that to improve the mental health of queer students, the first year of university is crucial to involving these students in supportive communities. Women face extreme gender bias in parenthood, often criticized for activity which goes unnoticed with their male counterparts, even when identical. Children exposed to arts and literature through their parents may have a stronger skill-set in expressing their emotions Because signs of autism tend to manifest as forms of withdrawal in girls, versus hyperactivity in boys, young girls with autism often go overlooked and undiagnosed. A recent study of Toronto’s Regent Park area indicates that Community Gardening promotes positive mental health through the ability to access fresh food of one’s own culture, as well as through connecting many demographics via food sharing. Studies of the medical industry have found that women, especially women of colour, face an uphill battle in the medical system: often reports of symptoms are dismissed, and many women feel further discouraged from voicing their emotional and physical struggles. Based on a local Toronto initiative, a program which allows participants who are coping with chronic pain and illness to receive counselling from those who personally share this experience themselves, we see that this strategy maintains the clients’ engagement with the program and its community.
